About The Book
A critical understanding about the practice of democracy in the context of economic reforms, for the last more than two decades, has been the need of the hour.
“I do not minimize the difficulties that lie ahead on the long and arduous journey on which we have embarked. But as Victor Hugo once said, “no power on earth can stop an idea whose time has come”. I suggest to this august House that the emergence of India as a major economic power in the world happens to be one such idea. Let the whole world hear it loud and clear. India is now wide awake. We shall prevail. We shall overcome”.
This was the ardent budget speech made by Dr. Manmohan Singh as the Finance Minister on watershed moment of July 24, 1991, which is the hallmark of the changed fortunes of the Indian Economy. If in 1947 India got politically independent, in 1991 it made its economy free. In 1990-91, India went through a severe economic crisis, it tried to respond it by opening the door of economy and it helped.
The three day colloquium on Need for Inclusive Reforms: Varying Perspectives proved to be the meeting ground and effective platform for academicians, resource persons, research scholars and teacher educators to exchange experiences, knowledge, queries and insights from various disciplines and to introspect about the numerous challenges to the country’s inclusive growth. This book is an attempt to comprehensively describe the genesis, advancement and prospects of economic reforms in India since 1991 and also endeavours to chronicles post liberalisation period in different context and approaches.
